Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant. It is similar to vitamin K, and essential to energy production in the mitochondria of the body's cells, (which are known as energy factories), with the final product being energy. Coenzyme Q10 is also called ubiquinone or ubidecarenone, because it is found in every cell of the body.

Coenzyme Q10 is produced in all our cells in the first two decades of life and decreases gradually thereafter. Statin drugs taken to reduce cholesterol levels also inhibit the body's production of Coenzyme Q10. The richest source of Coenzyme Q10 is organ meat, like liver, kidney, and heart and dark green leafy vegetables, but processing and cooking reduces the Coenzyme Q10 content.

The amount of Coenzyme Q10 needed is about 2mg per kilo body weight per day and is beneficial for athletic performance and heart health.

Oxidation is  like  rust and results in free radicals (unstable destructive molecules) which start reactions which damage our cells and DNA, and also contribute to our ageing process. Oxidation occurs naturally in our bodies during metabolisation and is increased by activities such as smoking, exercise, and environmental toxins such as pollution, radiation, UV light & poisons.

Antioxidants reduce the free radicals, by being receivers or scavengers of the oxygen that causes the oxidation. The best way to increase our bodies defences of these free radicals is to consume anti-oxidant rich foods and supplements.
